Probe President Pete Baumann demonstrates how to "take the break out" of breaking putts to Arnold Palmer.

Larry Laoretti, winner of the 1992 Senior United States Open Championship using his PROBE driver, practices "taking the break out" of breaking putts in Hawaii.

I obtained four patents on my original PROBE 20/20 Patent Pending putter in 1992. The inverted shaft was unique, and made sense. Why make a putter with the same shaft that is in every iron when the putter is the only club you do not swing hard? Why not use a shaft that promotes a true pendulum stroke when rolling the ball, not striking it?

The shaft in the center of the shaft made sense, so the head does not work against the player by opening up at impact like most other putters. That’s why a putt that breaks to the right is the hardest putt for a right-hander to make! A toe-heavy putter makes those putts break more than they should, and breaking putts are much more difficult to make than straight putts.

In 1992 I worked with Arnold Palmer on the putting green, showing him how to do amazing tricks with his PROBE. Arnie used the PROBE for almost two years until he signed an endorsement contract with Callaway. While Callaway has had to pay tour players to use their clubs, I have never had to do so!

In 1991, Chi Chi Rodriquez used my PROBE driver to add 30 yards to his drives, and won four times in three months. Chi Chi’s agent wanted me to pay Chi Chi $150,000 to continue playing the PROBE off the tee for the rest of 1991. I refused, and Chi Chi accepted much more than that to change to Callaway’s Big Bertha driver. He went from the leading money winner to tenth on the money list in six months! A year later his putting instructor asked me for a PROBE putter for Chi Chi to try. Apparently Chi Chi was too embarrassed to ask me for one after what he had done to me with his driver! I shipped him two putters, one with a 350 gram head and one with a 400 gram head. Chi Chi took the PROBE putter to Ko Olina in Hawaii the next week and won by six shots! That was his first win since changing from his PROBE driver to Big Bertha!

In 1992 I made Larry Laoretti a PROBE driver, he added 30 yards to his drives, and then won the 1992 Senior United States Open Championship! Later that year he asked me for a PROBE 20/20 Patent Pending putter, and used it to improve his putting dramatically.

ARNIE IN LA
Pete Baumann, President of Probe Golf, discusses the merits of Probe Golf's
advanced driver technology with Arnold Palmer.

But it was not until this year, 2011, that we took a closer look at the type of shaft material in the PROBE putter series. By going to our newest metal composite in the shaft, with its increased torque (twisting) capability, we can now show each customer how to reduce the break in any breaking putt, whether it normally breaks to the right or to the left. And our current torque capability has increased the amount of side spin the PROBE can put on the ball, reducing even further how much the ball will break, and increasing how much the player can straighten out each putt.

I predict that once we have time to spend with a number of tour professionals and show them the PROBE’s “break canceling” effects will straighten out those tough, short three to four foot breaking putts, the PROBE will become the number one putter on tour among players who use what they want to play, not what they are paid to play!

Serious golfers who are really motivated to putt better, such as tour professionals whose livelihoods depend on their putting, may email me about personal putting instruction with the PROBE putter line.
